Even though I have lived in Wales most of my life, I had never heard of St Dwynwen's Day until a few years ago. If you are unfamiliar with this celebration, it is the Welsh version of St Valentine's Day and is celebrated on January 25th when lovers exchange cards and gifts, and gaze lovingly into each others eyes whilst enjoying a romantic meal. (Or just buy a takeaway and a few beers to share in front of Netflix!)
According to the Visit Wales website, St Dwynwen was a 4th-century Welsh princess who lived in what is now the Brecon Beacons National Park. Dwynwen was unlucky in love, so she became a nun and prayed that true lovers have better luck than she did.
St Dwynwen's Day has become increasingly popular in recent years, especially with Welsh speakers. So if you are on the look out for a gift for your loved one, or a card to send to someone special, have a browse through our curated guide.
And please let me know in the comments if you celebrate St Dwynwen's Day....what is the most romantic thing any one has ever done for you?
